DRM Helpfile 02 Installation - SmartScreen Filter Warning

Windows SmartScreen may display a warning or block the download when you save or run the installer. This is expected behavior for executable files that are new or infrequently downloaded — SmartScreen bases its warning on download reputation and frequency, not on whether a file is actually safe.

Why This Happens

SmartScreen assigns a reputation score to downloadable files based on how often they have been downloaded across Windows systems worldwide. A legitimate file from a small or specialized application will trigger this warning simply because it has not yet accumulated enough download history, even when it is safe and properly signed.

The File Is Safe

All executable files on this site are scanned for malware before release and are digitally signed using SSL.com code-signing certificates issued to David Cobb. The digital signature is applied after scanning to ensure integrity and traceability. You can verify the signature before running the file:

1. Right-click the downloaded file and choose Properties.
2. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
3. Confirm the Signer name is David Cobb and the certificate is issued by SSL.com.
4. If the signature is valid, the file is safe to run.

Completing the Download if SmartScreen Blocks It

1. If your browser shows a warning instead of saving the file, click the three-dot menu (or More) next to the download entry.
2. Choose Keep or Download Anyway (exact wording varies by browser).
3. If Windows SmartScreen appears when running the installer, click More Info and then Run Anyway.

NOTE: If you continue to see warnings after verifying the signature, ensure your browser and operating system are up to date and that security software is not quarantining the downloaded file.

WARNING: If the Digital Signatures tab is missing, or the signer name does not match David Cobb / SSL.com, do not run the file. Contact support before proceeding.
